Which of these proteins might be right for you?
Most protein powders are made from milk.
Milk provides a good quality protein with all the essenital amino acids and its cheap. But if you are Lactose intolerant or dairy sensitive you have to be careful. Some protein powders made from milk you can drink and others you can't. Lactose is the sugar in milk. Some protein manufactures take almost all the lactose out of their product, making it as safe as possible for you to drink.
Here is how milk is broken down into its various proteins.
Milk Proteins
Remember little Miss Muffit sitting on her tuffit eating her curds and whey? If you have ever eaten cottage cheese then you have eaten curds and whey. That would be the same whey used in most protein powders today. The solid parts are the curds and the liquid part is the whey. And both are used in protein powders. What could be simpler? Yet what they do to the curds and whey is not simple!
Casein Protein…"the slow protein"
Casein is made from curds, and turns into a gel in your stomach. Casein is removed from the curds several different ways.
- Micellar Caseins ….One way uses filters to get the casein out of the curds, but a little whey gets mixed in too. These proteins are called Micellar Caseins and they are a higher quality.
- Caseinates…The other way to get casein out of the curd is to use chemicals and heat. These are called Caseinates and are a cheaper casein with less quality.
- Sometimes they are called Denatured Caseins because the heat destroys some of the amino acids.
- Both types of Casein stay in the stomach for a long time and digests very slowly for as long as 7 hours. This allows the body to have proteins for an extended period of time.
- Dieters drink Caseins to fill their stomachs for long periods of time so they won't be hungry.
- While body builders use Casein at night to repair and re-build sore muscles.
