What is Protein?
There are three main sources of protein
All protein shakes get their proteins from either milk, eggs and/or soy beans. Some proteins are better than others. What makes the difference is the number and type of amino acids a protein has.
- Proteins are made up of long chains of amino acids. There are 20, 21 or 22 amino acids depending on which source you read.* Proteins come in all combinations of these amino acids. Think of a child playing with 22 building blocks pretending to make a train. Sometimes he will make a short train, sometimes it's long. He uses different blocks in different orders, all different lengths. Each of these trains represent different types of proteins.
- An excellent protein doesn't have to include all 22 amino acids. You don't even have to worry about getting all of them in your diet. Thank Goodness! Nature has been good to you, your body can make most of the amino acids from the various chemicals in your body. Just 9 of them are absolutely essential! So all you really need to eat daily are the 9 essential amino acids and your body can do the rest!
These 9 essential amino acids form a high quality "complete protein".
- You can get these from your food, which by the way is no easy task.
- Last time I checked even a steak did not have all 9 essential amino acids!
- But guess what does… peanut butter on wheat bread, mac and cheese (real cheese), peas and fish, peas and rice, beans and cornbread … these have all 9 essential amino acids.
- You don't even have to eat all 9 at each meal. All you have to do is to have them sometime within a 24 hour period.
- If you eat a 'short train' protein at lunch, lacking a couple of essential amino acids, all you have to do is have the missing amino acids at dinner … then all is well. ( Assuming you knew which amino acids you missed and what food you needed eat to replace them at dinner.)
-
Keeping up with the number an type of amino acids is difficult … just ask any vegetarian.
The easy thing is to add a protein drink!
One scoop of protein powder in water can give you 24 gms of a complete protein!
- 24 grams of protein is in about 3 ounces of beef… and even steak is not a complete protein. Having one shake a day can supply all the essential amino acids you are missing in your food.
- So simple, but most people just don't know how important proteins are.
